How Hard Is The Surrey Three Peaks Challenge?

The Surrey Three Peaks is the most accessible of the three peaks challenges - but don't underestimate it. Twenty-three miles through the Surrey Hills is still a serious undertaking.

The Numbers

  • 23 miles of walking (37km)
  • 1,060 metres of total ascent (3,478ft)
  • Three peaks: Box Hill, Holmbury Hill, and Leith Hill
  • Continuous walking - no driving between peaks
  • Typically completed in 10-12 hours

How Does It Compare?

Challenge Distance Ascent Time Target
Surrey Three Peaks 23 miles 1,060m 10-12 hours
Yorkshire Three Peaks 24 miles 1,585m 12 hours
National Three Peaks 23 miles 3,064m 24 hours

The Surrey Three Peaks has the least ascent of the three peaks challenges, making it a good introduction to long-distance walking or preparation for bigger challenges.

What Makes It Challenging?

The Distance

Twenty-three miles is a long way to walk in a single day. Most people don't regularly walk more than 10 miles, so the distance alone requires preparation.

Continuous Effort

Like the Yorkshire Three Peaks, there's no driving between summits. You walk the entire route without extended rest, testing your endurance throughout the day.

Undulating Terrain

The Surrey Hills involve constant ups and downs. Rather than three distinct climbs, you'll encounter numerous smaller ascents and descents which accumulate over the day.

Navigation

The route passes through woodland and across open heathland. While paths are generally well-marked, navigation requires attention in places.

Fitness Level Required

The Surrey Three Peaks is accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness who prepares properly. You should be able to:

  • Walk 10-12 miles comfortably
  • Keep walking for 8+ hours
  • Handle hilly terrain

Regular walkers will find 4-6 weeks of preparation sufficient. If you're less active, allow 2-3 months to build your fitness. See our training guide for advice.

The Three Peaks

Box Hill (224m)

Famous from the 2012 Olympics cycling road race. A steady climb with excellent views across the Weald.

Holmbury Hill (261m)

Site of an Iron Age hillfort. The climb through woodland leads to open heathland at the summit.

Leith Hill (294m)

The highest point in south-east England. The tower at the summit takes you above 1,000 feet.

Can I Do It?

If you can walk 10 miles without difficulty, are willing to train for a few weeks, and can handle a long day on your feet - yes, you can complete the Surrey Three Peaks.

It's an ideal first challenge or stepping stone to the Yorkshire or National Three Peaks.
