Frequently Asked Questions about the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge

Logistics

  • What kit do I need for this event?

Please see the event kit list for everything required, and please note the several mandatory items.

  • How do we book for a group?

Either, proceed with a single booking for all your group members. We'll send you a participant form link to share with your group. You'll need to arrange payments amongst yourselves.

Or, book for yourself (and any close group members), and we'll give you a group booking link to share - anyone who uses that link to book will be grouped with you as normal on the challenge, but be responsible for their own payments and forms.

  • Is there a minimum age to take part in the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge?

We can accommodate participants of 14 years-of-age and over - please check with us in advance of booking for participants under 18. We require that participants who are under 18 are accompanied by a parent.

  • When do we sleep?!

We have about four hours to rest and sleep during the early hours, in the minibus while travelling to the final climb. We finish from around 8am onwards on the Sunday in Cardiff so we suggest restful plans for the remainder of the day.

  • Can I take part in the Welsh Three Peaks while pregnant?
Our guidance is that you shouldn't take part in the Three Peaks while pregnant.
  • Do I need insurance?

We recommend that you take out travel insurance as you might for an overseas trip, to protect against missed travel connections and lost belongings.

  • Where do we start?

We meet at Chester Railway Station, postcode CH1 3NT, at 10am. This is in the centre of Chester city with various accommodation options available nearby.

  • Where do we finish?

We'll also finish at Chester Railway Station, postcode CH1 3NT, on Sunday morning - we'll expect to arrive around 9am, and we strongly recommend booking any onward travel without a fixed time in case we are delayed.

  • What routes do we take?

On the mountains, we take the following routes

    • Snowdon: ascend Pyg Track, descend Rhyd Ddu Path
    • Cadair Idris: Pony Path from Ty Nant
    • Pen y Fan: ascend from Storey Arms, descend on the Beacons Way
  • Is there any accommodation provided during the event?

No accommodation is required during this event, but you may need to make arrangements for accommodation before we meet in Chester on the Saturday, or after we finish on Sunday, depending on your onward travel plans.

  • What food and drink is provided?

Food provided includes things like sandwiches, bacon rolls, and soup. Water top-ups are provided each time we return to the vehicles. You may want to bring your preferred snacks to carry with you during the climbs (Kendell mint cake and sweets recommended).

  • Can I leave bags in the minibus while climbing?

Yes, you're welcome to bring an overnight bag which we will store for you. Spare kit not required on the mountains can be stored in the minibus.
